times of (great) change.

really, what does it say of a country, when the opposition winning a mere 6 out of 87 seats in parliament is considered a great victory and something to be rejoiced over? looking just at the figures, it sounds so little as to be insignificant, doesn't it? but the sad truth of it is that it is a "great" step forward in politics in singapore.

the grc system is one big farce of a democracy, and nothing proves it more clearly and starkly than a good minister having to exit the parliament and an unworthy (or rather, extremely unpopular) newbie entering by riding on the coattails of other political veterans.

also, i have the greatest respect for mr. chiam see tong, and even though his losses this time round signal his retirement from the political scene, i still think he is a hero for so doggedly pursuing his political goal and standing firmly as an alternative voice all these years.

what an exciting night.
